Jean Marc-Decrop:
In one of those paintings 《Watching》, the dead body cannot be seen, and the viewer may wonder about the reason for the gravity, the concern in the expression of the figures. The figures are painted on a background of green landscape, they look worried, there is a strange feeling, a strange atmosphere as if something super - natural has happened, but the cause is not shown. It may in fact lead to some misunderstanding. I remember the curators from the pompidou, in the exhibition《Alors, la Chine?》where the painting was shown, liked it very much. They thought it was painted to reflect that some people in China are lost, directionless, worried and wondering about the drastic transformations under way. Liu Xiaoding: Actually the painting《Watching》is recording a kind of psychology in space. How people are curious about other things, about the Unknown, about the Other World. In that painting nobody knows what the figures are thinking. When people see other people die, they always think what can happen to themselves, why and what kind of experience it is. —Extract from Liu Xiaodong, Redflag Collection, Map Book Publishers, Hong Kong ,2006 Back |
